Yoma Ground Truthing, Malawi and Peru

Objective /
Description

Remote sensing applications using satellites and drones allow to monitor land use change at scale. Calibrating and validating such applications require the collection of ground truth data – a vital yet laboursome task. This project, a cooperation of UNICEF, the Wyss Academy for Nature, remote sensing specialists, the CLI, and further partners, aims to identify best practice approaches in scaling ground truthing efforts by engaging young people in land use monitoring through a digital platform (Yoma). Two practical use cases demonstrate the feasibility of the approach: Monitoring restoration success on degraded land in Malawi and estimating tree cover and biomass within agroforestry systems in Peru.
